In order to get the best experience at the Samba Street Party, you should do a little research on when and where these lively little jigs will be happening. The parties are held throughout the year, but they reach their peak during the world-famous Carnival season.
Check local event calendars, log onto travel websites or listen to travel agent advice: find out which blocos or cordões occur on the dates of your visit. Jot down samba street party dates, times and venues, so you won’t miss a thing.
Decide How to Choose Parties Best for You
You can’t go to all the parties, so choose the ones you want to attend according to your preferences.
Do you crave a large, high energy party or something a little more intimate? Do you want to experience traditional samba music or does something more modern appeal to you?
Read up on the various blocos or cordões, and find out from other travellers’ stories or hearsay what the feeling is like at each party, what kind of music genres each one features and what type it is overall.
Pedra Do Sal
We chose to go out on a Monday and find the best samba street party in Rio to attend. You can’t lose with Pedra Do Sal—the biggest street party in Rio outside of carnival and a must-do on any Rio de Janeiro itinerary.
Pedra Do Sal (Salt Stone) is famous as the birthplace of Samba. Every Monday night, unless there is rain in the offing, the wonderful group Roda De Pedra gathers to play their entrancing rhythms in front of historic rock steps.
As the day nears 8 pm, this place is increasingly popular with both residents and visitors from around the globe. On either side of a central square, vendors line up with small stands offering food or souvenir crafts.
As it turns out, prices in these street stalls are surprisingly easy on the pocket for such an event. We only paid around $10 for some incredible vegetarian Yakisoba and a few bottles of beer. All the vendors take credit cards and lines move fast.
By 9 o’clock, the square is already crowded with people and groups continue to come. By 9:30, it is packed with hundreds, maybe thousands, of people all swaying in unison to the sounds of Samba.
Is it safe to attend?
We saw a lot of locals, but not many locals when we were there. Pedra Sal is about 30 minutes away from the touristy areas of Copacabana and Ipanema, so we were concerned about safety.
But basically, it felt safe in our opinion; you just need to follow some guidelines that are standard practice for large street parties.
- Pay attention to your own safety. Do not wear any jewelry, expensive watches or flash cash.
- Stick around families or go with locals
- Do not go into the alleys surrounding the square or the rock.
- Take photos and videos, but do it safely and keep expensive phones out of view
Tips for the Samba Street Parties
1. Dress Comfortably and Get Carnivalesque!
When you visit the Samba Street Parties of Rio De Janeiro, your choice of clothing should be comfortable and not break this ethos of carnival spirit.
So choose lightweight, fresh clothes that let you sprawl out a bit and still keep cool amidst all the active goings-on outside. Bring a little of the carnival spirit into your own dress: a bright scarf, some feathers on a hat, something fun.
2. Stay hydrated and use sunscreen
Rio De Janeiro’s Samba Street Parties can get lively and energetic, so it’s essential that you take care of yourself amidst the excitement. The combination of dancing and warm weather can dehydrate. So be sure to carry your reusable water bottle and take regular sips throughout the festivities. Additionally, generously apply sunscreen before heading out and take a small bottle with you for reapplication later into the evening.
3. Comfortable shoes
Comfortable shoes are also a must. You’ll be on your feet for the duration of the evening, so make sure that your footwear provides support and won’t leave you with sore or blistered feet at the end.
4. Stay aware of your surroundings
As with any lively and crowded event, it is essential to be aware of your surroundings in the Samba Street Parties. While the atmosphere generally is safe and happy, it is still wise to remain alert. Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas, especially when you are alone later at night. Stick to well-populated streets and avenues.

5. Keep your personal effects secure during crowded events
During the Samba Street Parties, be sure to keep your personal effects safe, too. Although the celebrations have an almost infectious atmosphere of mutual support and camaraderie, it is always best to err on the side of caution.
Don’t walk about with lots of money in your pocket. As an extra security measure, you may want a money belt or a secure pocket that can be well hidden under clothing.
6. Display Good Manners to Both Locals and Fellow Partygoers
