Such issues must be addressed if we hope for a brighter tomorrow. Hopefully, by illuminating these issues, we can further the dialogue and action needed. This list takes a look at 11 harsh realities of America that people often ignore.

Healthcare System

For most Americans, the American healthcare system is hell. Many cannot afford healthcare due to the high cost & complexities of insurance plans. Even with insurance, people often still face high medical bills. As a consequence, access to healthcare has become unequal – some have the privilege of receiving state of the art care while others struggle to secure even basic healthcare services. Something needs to be done about just how inefficient and expensive our healthcare system has gotten.

Income Inequality

The rise of income inequality in the United States is a problem. A small percentage of the country has enormous wealth and another large swath struggles just to get by. The gulf between the middle-class and the rich is widening, with single mothers and other low income households struggling even more to emerge from under a mountain of bills. That income inequality further holds back some people, especially the poor, from climbing up the social mobility ladder — with access to things like education, housing & health care.

Education System Disparities

The American education system is hugely polarized. Schools in rich areas get more resources and better teachers – poorer areas don’t. This gap can continue the poverty cycle and limit poorer students. We must provide all children with the same opportunity – to learn in a school that offers high quality education to everyone.

Gun Violence

The US has a gun epidemic. There are too many gun deaths and injuries. Almost daily, it is reported that mass shootings & homicides have taken place. Despite continued discussion and outcry for change, gun control is controversial. Something has to be done – but no one wants to take charge to do it.

Homelessness

In multiple cities all over the United States, homelessness is a stark and urgent issue. High housing prices & economic instability play a part in this crisis. Some have no other option but to live on the streets or in shelters. The efforts to solve homelessness are falling short, leaving these vulnerable populations stranded.

Racial Inequality

There are racial issues in the US – plain and simple. Even though we have progressed in civil rights, systemic racism & discrimination continue to cause all kinds of inequities from employment to education to health care & criminal justice. Income, housing and law enforcement treatment manifest themselves differently in the lives of people of color. Regular initiatives need to be taken so that such systemic inequalities are not permitted to ruin the level playing field for everyone.

Political Polarization

In recent years, political polarization in American culture has grown deeper and more pronounced. Political partisanship and ideological division frequently cause gridlock within the government, preventing movement on a number of key issues. It causes us to be aggressive with those on the other side & ruins any chance of meaningful dialogue or reconciliation. With this, it is impossible to tackle head-on the crucial issues the country faces today.

Environmental Challenges

The US has major environmental problems impacting conservation – the most recent being climate change, pollution and dwindling resources. This environmental degradation is due to industrial activities, the use of fossil fuels and less strict laws. Above all, they are easy to get around, thanks to frequent political and economic obstructions. Environmental problems materialize in weather extremities, causing health problems and loss of biodiversity.

Access to Childcare

Good, affordable childcare is a significant problem for most of the American families. High costs and a lack of accommodation in childcare — particularly for mothers — leave families with no option but to exit the workforce entirely or utilize lower-quality care for their children.

Criminal Justice System

American criminal justice is shot through with various injustices: systemic racism at every stage of the process from initial arrest to the treatment of prisoners in general; a practice of mass incarceration; an over-reliance on harsh sentencing — not just for violent criminals, but often for low-level drug offenders. These problems are particularly severe in communities of color and low income people. Punitive punishment only serves to widen social disparities and ignore the actual reasons for which crime occurs. If we are ever to be the land of the free, our criminal justice system must change to create a more fair and just society.

Mental Health Crisis

America is in crisis over mental health, as a massive number of individuals have untreated mental health problems. This is largely due to stigma, a lack of access to care & insufficient funding for mental health services. From personal relationships to employment, mental health conditions affect every part of our lives. Combatting this crisis calls for holistic support, treatment and mental health awareness.
