Barn raising involves the entire neighborhood showing up in your backyard, ready to roll up their sleeves & help you build a barn. Rather than simply putting up a structure, it’s a day when everyone chips in. It’s the clearest example of how people in rural areas rely on each other. Sure, it’s hard work—but by the end of the day, everyone feels a sense of accomplishment.
Quilting Bees
Quilting bees are the original social network. People get together and bring their pieces of fabric. As they stitch quilts together, they also weave stories & share advice, making for a rather relaxing way to spend time. Each quilt is a piece of art, filled with history & love that we pass down as family heirlooms.
Harvest Festivals
When fall rolls around, it’s time for the harvest festival and it’s a big deal in rural America. It’s a time to celebrate the hard work of the growing season through music, food & games. But at its heart, we’re thanking the land for its bounty. Everyone comes together for some fun and feasting!
Hunting and Fishing Trips
For many families, hunting and fishing trips are the best way to bond and teach the younger ones about nature. In many rural places, Sunday is for church—and the social gathering afterward. It’s a time for spiritual renewal and catching up with neighbors, which helps to reinforce community bonds. Homecoming and High School Football Games
In the cities, homecoming and football games are school events—but in rural places, they’re community-wide celebrations. The whole town turns out to cheer on the team and you can practically taste the excitement in the air! It’s a time when people come together to share stories and show their local pride.
Canning and Preserving
Canning and preserving food is a family affair as everyone pitches in to prepare fruits & vegetables for the winter. Such a skill continues the tradition of self-sufficiency while we make the most of the harvest. There’s nothing quite like opening a jar of summer peaches in the middle of winter!
Community Rodeos
You can’t get more rural than a rodeo! Many local families take part, or at least cheer on their neighbors, as they compete in barrel racing & roping. And let’s not forget bull riding! Rodeos bring the community together as they celebrate their Western heritage & the skills that come with it.
