When baby boomers were young, they faced many issues that left them confused. Some problems were hard to understand, and they still remember them today. From strange social rules to outdated technology, these things didn’t always make sense.

Division of Housework

For many Baby Boomers, the way housework was divided based on gender is still a strong memory. Most Boomers remember how boys would get to play freely while girls were put straight to work like window cleaning, ironing, cooking and laundry (even as young as 8 years old). Over time, girls started to question the fairness of promoting these stereotypes. It also made them think how both husband and wife need to pull their weight together no matter what gender they belong to.
Biased Gift Giving

Looking back, many Baby Boomers remember how gender roles were very strict when it came to gifts. Girls would receive dolls, board games and play kitchens; boys would receive things like bikes, radios or watches. These experiences made many of them question why gifts had to fit into such narrow gender boxes.
Seat Belt Struggles: Adults vs. Logic

Why would an adult argue with wearing seat belts? This was one thing that puzzled many Baby Boomers. Even though kids could see how much safer it was to wear them, some grown-ups refused to use them. This left many boomers scratching their heads as they tried to understand why the adults around them didn’t see the obvious safety benefits.
The War on Credit Cards: Embracing Financial Conservatism

Many Baby Boomers have experienced their parents strong dislike of debt. A lot of the boomers remember how their parents thought any debt was a horrible thing. Some boomers still hold onto this thought, even when banking and digital payments have now become more widespread. It made them believe that it was better to pay cash for homes and major purchases. And it created a very warped sense of financial responsibility.
The Vietnam War: Generations Divided

For Baby Boomers, Vietnam was a big deal. Most easily remember the draft and how 18-year-olds were sent to war. Although their parents, who had lived through war, were more likely to back the war effort and government action, many from the Baby Boomer generation opposed Vietnam or war in general. They didn’t believe in the cause, and the destruction it caused to young lives made a big impact.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Revolution: Parents and Pop Culture

The generational gap was also there in music. Baby Boomers laugh now about how their parents hated rock and roll. One boomer recalled how his parents predicted The Beatles would be forgotten just a few weeks after their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. This story shows just how different musical tastes were between Baby Boomers and their parents.
Gender Barriers: Aspiring Beyond Expectations

Baby Boomers, especially girls, remember being held back by gender expectations. Girls were always expected to be neat and well-behaved (like little ladies) but boys were encouraged to play and explore. This divide meant many girls felt their voices were neither heard nor important.
Dress Codes and Harassment: A Different Era

When Baby Boomers were growing up, issues like workplace harassment and dress code were handled differently. Many Baby Boomers recall when their parent thought that it was okay to accept policies like girls not being allowed to wear pants to school. Some remember how. sexual harassment was often shrugged off as just a lack of humor or even seen as a sign of affection.
Parental Expectations and Obligations

In some dysfunctional households of Baby Boomers, kids were always expected to measure up to the standards parents set. Some remember their parents acting like their children owed them something just for being born. This sense of owing something shaped how Baby Boomers viewed family dynamics and the sense of responsibility they had toward their parents.
Environmental Awakening: Pollution and Change

Growing up during the Baby Boomer era, the environment was in rough. Some rivers were so polluted they sometimes caught on fire, and smog shrouded cities. Boomers, in particular, witnessed the broad use of pesticides and other pollution that led to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1970. The fight for cleaner air and water was a major turning point.
Hair and Gender Bias: Battle of the Locks

Baby Boomers will still argue over long hair, gender roles, and jobs. Boys with long hair discriminated and sometimes denied jobs, and girls had to follow strict dress codes. The struggle to push back against these old-fashioned rules shows how rigid society was when it came to appearance and traditional gender roles.
Sexist Job Ads and Workplace Challenges

Baby Boomers remember how job ads were divided by gender when looking for jobs. This means, of course, that traditionally women were limited to roles such as secretaries, teachers or nurses, while males had a wide range of options to choose from. This divide also led to workplace sexism and even harassment.
Parenting Styles: Absent Fathers

Another big issue during the Baby Boomer years was how distant many fathers were when it came to parenting. Many boomers remember their fathers being absent or uninvolved in raising them. The children often felt like they were looking for the guidance that only a father could bring. And this lack resultantly screwed up the family dynamic for years.
Corporal Punishment

Spanking and corporal punishment used to be a part of normal parenting. As social values began to change, many began to talk against this practice. This change of attitudes towards discipline shows how parenting has developed over the years.
Confronting Racism

Baby Boomers grew up during a time of strong racial tensions, especially in the late 60s and early 70s. Many remember being shocked by the intolerance of their parents’ generation. Watching events like riots on TV and witnessing racial discrimination made Boomers question the fairness of these prejudices. This pushed many to stand up and fight against racism in their own generation.
