Traveling is always like entering a world of adventure, history, culture, and thrills. But as some travelers have commented on social media, not all popular destinations live up to the hype, such as Venice’s overcrowded streets or Oxford Street’s shopping frenzy. These destinations disappoint tourists who dream of a unique, postcard-perfect experience. Here’s a look at what travelers really think about some of the world’s most overhyped destinations.

Hollywood, birthplace of movie magic, is disappointing for many visitors. On social media, you’ll see a barrage of opinions from tourists who thought that the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Sunset Boulevard were too crowded and not glamourous.  The neighborhood around it is also rife with homeless people and visible urban challenge, so that can be jarring. Hollywood, they argue, doesn’t measure up to the “movie star” image they wanted — it’s “dirty” and run-down.

Instagram Museums in NYC

There are people who think New York is full of “Instagram museums” where people go for the pictures, not the art. Many of these places have colorful rooms for selfies and photo shoots. But some feel they’re superficial and commercial. The price for entry to such pop-up museums is too high – and the end result is usually a couple of pictures and little actual experience of art. Some visitors say they felt disappointed and that it was more like spending money on “pretty backdrops” than something meaningful. Even the infamous ‘Museum of Candy’ received very poor reviews – many tourists complained that it didn’t have nearly as many treats as it promised.

The Mona Lisa

Seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre can be difficult. Some social-media users referred to it as more of a struggle than a viewing. The room where she is displayed is full of tourists who come just to get the photo or see her from a distance. Sometimes you can end up huddled back in the corner, unable to see the painting.  All the moving around & chatter also makes it difficult for anyone wanting a silent session with the art.

Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau once gave tourists the chance to feel the old Caribbean. But travelers say that it’s changed now with the construction of Atlantis and the constant inflow of cruise-ship passengers. Visitors post harrowing photos on social media complaining that Nassau has lost its quaintness and is now just a mob of chain restaurants and stores. Locals say that tourists have brought up the price of living and increased traffic jams. They also point out that pickpocketing and scams are now more widespread.

Caribbean Cruise Ship Ports

Caribbean Cruises seem like paradise, but they leave some tourists disappointed. Cruise ship ports host scores of visitors each day, so they tend to be overcrowded. One social media user described that these ports are dense with generic chain stores and chains of restaurants and have very little character. He/she called it the “McDonalds of the Caribbean”, where everything is custom-made for tourists.

Pisa, Italy

Thousands flock to the Leaning Tower of Pisa every year but, according to many, it’s not exactly a serene experience. The area is so crowded with tourists wanting the “holding up the tower” shot that it’s hard to move or take pictures. Social media accounts say the streets surrounding the hotel are filled with con artists selling extortionate mementos to tourists. Although the tower is beautiful in its own right, one is often lost in the crowds and the bustle, and unable to fully soak up history.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam – with its charming canals, cycling & rich history – has changed over time. Some visitors said that the city’s little traditional boutiques and street cafes had been replaced by frozen-yogurt parlors, department stores, and chocolate waffle stalls. The “party tourism” has changed the city’s overall vibe. This had made Amsterdam less charming and authentic and turned away tourists looking for something quieter and classical.

Yellowstone

Yellowstone National Park is spectacular. Yet other travelers found a dark side to it, especially when it’s crowded. It’s a theme park, they say, with queues, crowded viewing platforms, and noise. Some are alarmed at visitors violating park rules by coming too close to animals or littering or disturbing the wildlife. There have also been more fatal animal encounters in recent years due to people taking selfies too close.

Venice

Venice’s charm deteriorates when the month of August falls, and the city becomes a tourist trap. It felt like a horror film, one user commented. There is no way to house the millions of tourists that visit each year. It is straining the city’s vulnerable infrastructure, wrecking buildings and polluting. Increased housing prices and the shrinking population also contribute to Venice’s difficulties.

Everyone wants to see the Sistine Chapel. But most are let down by this experience. The chapel is crowded and there is rarely any time to even take a look at Michelangelo’s frescoes. Visitors are shuffled through by guides, and the entire affair is rushed, so that art enthusiasts really don’t have much time to enjoy the art. Everyone on social media complains how difficult it is to applaud work with so many people squished together. One even called it a “cattle drive”.

Las Ramblas in Barcelona

Las Ramblas is one of the most popular places to visit in Barcelona. But it also happens to be a pickpocket’s paradise. Visitors tend to stay on high alert, carefully guarding their bags while they move along the crowded sidewalk. It’s overcrowded, and visitors say that many tourist attractions are too expensive to visit. Travelers often feel that it no longer feels authentic, with row after row of souvenir shops and watered-down sangrias.

Bali

Bali is renowned for its natural beauty and local hospitality. However, some users’ visits were marred by aggressive street vendors. Even though the island is picturesque and the food delicious, the constant bargaining and the compulsion to buy souvenirs put a damper on it. And most of them also complained about filthy, rubbish-laden beaches and traffic jams that completely ruined their visit.

Oxford Street, Central London

Oxford Street in Central London is a popular place for shopping, but not for the faint of heart. Users describe it as grossly overcrowded, with overpriced merchandise. This is an experience that should be avoided or substituted with a visit to Soho.
